Laminate vs. SPC Flooring: Which Is Better?
Many people mistakenly believe that SPC and laminate flooring are the same. No, they are not.
1. Core material
Laminate flooring-The core material used for this type of flooring is usually fiberboard. It can be either medium density fiberboard (MDF) or high-density fiberboard (HDF), depending on the quality of the laminate flooring you choose. Higher quality laminate flooring uses waterproof HDF as the core material. This helps to improve the overall durability of the laminate flooring.
SPC flooring uses solid Stone-Plastic Composite material as the core material. Solid SPC has a high density, making it strong enough to withstand heavy foot traffic, durable, and of course, waterproof. In fact, some manufacturers also include SPC in the backing layer.
2. Water Resistance
The core of laminate flooring is made of wood fibres and is therefore susceptible to water or moisture. Once laminate flooring comes into contact with water, problems such as swelling and curling edges are common.
Luxury SPC flooring has good water resistance. This is why you can see SPC flooring being installed in wet areas such as bathrooms, laundry areas, and kitchens.
If natural-looking, long-lasting and easy to install flooring is what you are after, then SPC should be your first choice. That, coupled with it being waterproof and stable under high heats, makes SPC flooring an ideal choice for any room. It handles high foot-traffic easily, is easy to maintain and comes in a large variety of colour and size options.
3. Warranty
In general, Laminate flooring comes with five or fewer years of warranty. SPC flooring is durable & much more reliable, some SPC Flooring even comes with longer warranty periods of ten or more years
4. Cleaning & Maintenance
Laminate layers are susceptible to water, moisture and wet mopping, So, it is always recommended to clean the flooring with a vacuum or other dry methods.
Cleaning & maintaining the SPC flooring can be easy though! Since it’s water-resistant, you can easily clean it with sweeping or wet mopping.
5. Price
Generally, you can find cheaper options in laminate flooring over SPC flooring material. But everything comes with a price, doesn’t it? Though laminate flooring can be a cheaper option at the beginning, it’s actually tough to maintain, clean & repair with time.
